Primate's Death Hidden from the Public

A couple of months ago, I had heard rumors that not all of the former WAO capuchins may be alive today. So, I asked a couple of friends of mine to post queries with Jungle Friends to learn how the former WAO monkeys fared.  Specifically, I was interested in finding out how Spazz was doing.

Jungle Friends' Facebook page:

We saw WAR last night and were wondering how the "alpha male" monkey is doing today. Has he settled in? We'd love to see an "after" picture of him in his new home!

Dear Kari:

I hope I didn't do anything wrong posting the question to the Jungle Friends Facebook page. My girlfriend and I were just wondering how he did during the move to Florida considering how how upset he seemed by the guy who went into the monkey cage on Sunday's Discovery Show.

I apologize if we offended Jungle Friends in any way.

Mark

Hi Mark,

No, you didn’t offend and I am glad that you cared enough to inquire. I just didn’t want to post on Facebook that the WAO alpha male, who they called Spook, and our apprentices named Phineas, died over a month ago. He started losing weight so we took him to the vet for an exam and found that his heart was very enlarged, in the ex-ray it went from one end of his chest to the other. He became weaker and we had to separate him from the group and we had him on medication, but the vet said he could not survive. We kept him comfortable and on hospice care, our staff took him out special treats and doted on him, he was a favorite around here. Fortunately, he died with four of us around him, holding his hand and helping him to go from this life to the next. We do have the necropsy report here if you are interested in more details.

Everyone else is doing fine, the baby is growing up so fast, she is about a month old now and doing really great. If you are ever in our area, I hope you will come by for a visit, we would love to have you. Thank you for asking about Phineas.

Lots of monkey love,

Kari and the monks

Hi Mark, I will copy Lee and Tracey. Lee can get the necropsy from the clinic and have Tracey scan it and email it to you. We all still miss Phineas, he was a great guy! Lots of monkey love, Kari and the monks

Hmmm... Didn't want the public to know that Spook was dead. Why? If they did nothing wrong, then why hide the fact that Spook is dead? How many other former WAO capuchin deaths occur at Jungle Friends? So far, no necropsy report. Maybe Mark will receive it today...or not.   Sadly, Spook was not remembered on Jungle Friends' Gizmo Memorial Medical Fund web page along with all the other monks that passed away.  http://www.junglefriends.org/clinic.shtml

Another friend made an inquiry into Spazz this week, but thus far, no response.

Needless to say, this makes me wonder how many other former WAO animals are no longer with us that the sanctuaries would not like us to know?  Not only that, but I have a feeling that I would never have learned about the death of Spook, if Mark had not asked the question on Jungle Friend's Facebook page.

Later:

Well, here is the necropsy report.  Clearly, Lope should not have riled up this monk because he had a bad heart.  It is sad that there are people out there that will do anything, hurt anyone, just to obtain a sensationalized story.

Clearly, Lope should not have riled up this monk because he had a bad heart. It is sad that there are people out there that are willing do anything, hurt anyone, just to obtain a sensationalized story.  I say it again, where is the repo man when you need one?  Lope's "acting" days needs to end before he hurts or kills more animals just to get a "story" about "dangerous wild animals."

Much Later:

Based on email communications received later in the month, I have reason to believe Spazz was the monkey that died.  The reason why I believe this to be true was because (1) Jungle Friends changed the capuchin's name from Spazz to Pinneas, presumably to hide his recorded death; afterall, it would not look good if WAR's alpha male died from a heart attack (no doubt brought on because of his traumatic move from the WAO to Jungle Friends) and (2) the monkey that died was 12 years old.  Spazz was 12 years old and Spooky was 13 years old.

Changing the names of animals to hide animal deaths was a frequent tactic used by the Asvestas (Tarzan vs Leo and Leo vs Rex for example).  I find it interesting that Jungle Friends may be using this same tactic as the now defunct WAO.  Makes me wonder what other sanctuaries uses this same tactic to hid animal deaths.  Very scary.
