Winter Play at Safe Haven Rescue Zoo

Seeing Kovu's content face makes me very happy.  Thank you Jeanette for helping me make this possible for the three former WAO animals, Kovu, Ifaw, and Lulu (no pictured)!

Safe Haven would like to thank Kristina Brunner and Jeannette Ferro for their donation of three Boomer Balls for our new residents Ifaw, Kovu, and Lulu. They are loving their new toys.

Kovu (l) and Ifaw (r) together!  They look so handsome!

Too cute!

Ifaw exploring his boomerball!  The ball is soo tiny in comparison to the lion!

Swing and a miss. Kovu loves running around with his boomer ball.

Ifaw laying claim to his boomer ball, most likely to keep Kovu away from it.

Both the director and the intern had some great comments about the former WAO animals enjoying their enrichment toys:

Hi Kristina,

We don’t have pictures of lulu and her ball yet because she didn’t start playing with until after we walked away. She was scared of it at first. When we get some I will be sure to send them....

Thank you,
Lindsey

Hi Kristina,

We gave the Boomer balls to the lions and Lulu yesterday. They loved them! Kovu immediately grabbed his and batted it around. When we through Ifaw’s in he got to play with it for a few minutes, but then Kovu stole it! Lol LuLu was frightened of hers at first but she soon figured out that it could not hurt her, and played with it enthusiastically. I have attached pictures. We do have video but we are having a hard time uploading them to the computer. When we figure it out I will be sure to send them to you.

Hi Kristina,

We just got back in from giving them their new toys! We will download the stills and video and start sending copies to you. It is in the 40's today and sunny.

Kovu was ecstatic - running and chasing it. He finally settled down on the far end of his enclosure - covering his new prize as much as possible. Ifaw tackled his and had a great time - only to have it stolen by you know who - who was then covering 2 balls. Lulu just loves hers and has been chasing it all over the enclosure!

They really are enjoying them - thank you so much. We will get those pictures out as fast as possible to you both, Lynda
Later:

I've been looking into more stimulating and enrichment toys for the lions and tiger...I'm thinking after the New Year I'll send them a couple of more toys for them to enjoy!

Later - found this statement on Facebook page:

Safe Haven Rescue Zoo Safe Haven believes that environmental enrichment contributes to captive animal welfare by helping to maintain the animal in good physical and psychological health. Environmental enrichment at Safe Haven is designed to proactively encourage the expression of healthy, normal behaviors, as opposed to a reactive approach to negate undesirable behaviors.

Hopefully, I will not see any tiger or lion butt paintings listed as "enrichment" on this Facebook page!
